The following "Editor's Note" is actually a part of the story
Editor's Note

In my many years spent traveling and writing, it has become a rarity for a story to grasp my attention when it has bloomed from the fingertips of a young and inexperienced author that is not my younger self. With this in mind, I found it quite surprising when I happened upon an old diary that I found rather enjoyable as a story.

I was at the town of my genesis when I found the work among the burnt rubble of an old house whose structure has been long forgotten. Since I first began my life many years ago, I recall people speaking of the house in hushed tones, describing it as "cursed." All myths and legends have some basis that inspires them, however, and this pile of rubble is no exception, as these grounds have been its resting place longer than anyone in the town, the wood still radiating the stench of smoke from the first day the building collapsed, which was so long ago the date cannot be recalled. With this in mind, the wariness of locals would only make sense.

It was my curiosity that led me to search the rubble for items that may have survived. If the wood was still refusing to rot after many lifetimes, after all, there was a chance that some items remained untouched by looters and teenagers trying to prove their courage.

I found the book at the bottom of the charred wood and powdery white ashes, the latter being miraculously present despite the many countless years of Mother Nature beating at the skeleton of the house. It was in what I believe to be the basement of the house – the area was below the ground, singed floorboards concaving into the would-be intact room. Resting beside the book was a metal chain, still shining with an intensity found only on new metals; the book, eligible and lacking in any blemishes from fire or time. Needless to say, finding it was quite a shock.

As I read through the pages, the story behind the house slowly came into light, as did the story of those living in the house. Memories of past lives were recalled by the words of a young girl, sharing the past whose truth has been twisted, with facts left unspoken and lies implied in history books. The complete truth is too shameful to humans, who hate seeming weak with imperfections. They are willing to bend truths and assume optimistic ideas in order to make things seem less cruel and more ideal.

This past the author of the diary lived during was approximately three hundred years ago, just before the collapse of the Thaumaturgy and Association divisions. At the time, the country before this one was in a constant warfare. The use of sciences combined with magic – better known to you as "alchemy" had only started, the Thaumaturgy being the primary division to do so. The Association, meanwhile, lead the government offices, monopolizing the political structure. Those in the Thaumaturgy division wanted to establish themselves among the dogmatic monopoly, resulting in the land becoming scarred with battles between the power-hungry. Slums became the prime area for these intense battles, the poor being considered dispensable to the factions.

War riddled the country for about twenty years before it abruptly stopped, some unknown force resulting in the collapse of the Thaumaturgy and the Association. It is assumed that various internal struggles resulted in the collapse, but the swiftness with which the two groups faded is both unusual and unexplainable. It is because of this that I also find the diary of a young girl so interesting. In it are those final events – the final days, months, year – of the Thaumaturgy and the Association. Written across the pages is a child's tale, a tale we may never find the ending to.

Even so, this diary I chose to publish, for both your sake and my peace of mind. You may interpret it as you like, as the details are hard to clarify with such limited narration. With this in mind, I present to you the beginning of curse – Origins.

Author's Note:

This is a story I have messed around with a lot and have been debating for over a year, now. Originally I was planning on using restricted third person narration for the story, but decided instead to go with first person narration. A lot of this work is inspired by classic literary works that involve doubling, the most notable work being James Hogg's Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner. Hogg's "Found diary" setup is what inspired the narration along with several scenes that will appear in the story.

Have a great day, lovelies~
